Los Angeles, Dec 20 (DPA) Jamie Lynn Spears, the 16-year old sister of Britney Spears, is pregnant. The budding TV star, who plays a schoolgirl in the kids' TV series 'Zoey 101', told OK magazine that she was 12 weeks pregnant and planned to have the baby.
She named the father as her boyfriend, Casey Aldridge, the son of a paper-mill worker in her home state of Louisiana. She reportedly met him at church.
Access Hollywood quoted sources 'close to the Spears family' as saying that the couple wanted to get married but both their families opposed the idea.
'It was a shock for both of us, so unexpected,' Spears said in the OK Magazine interview. 'I was in complete and total shock, and so was he.'
The news made headlines across the US media, coming as her older sister is in the midst of a bitter custody battle over her two toddlers, amid official reports questioning her mothering skills.
According to the OK Magazine, Jamie Lynn confirmed the pregnancy through a home test. She later paid a visit to the doctor, who corroborated the news. She said she revealed the news to her parents shortly before Thanksgiving.
Asked by the magazine about what message her pregnancy might send to young people, she said: 'I definitely don't think it's something you should do. It's better to wait. But I can't be judgmental because it's a position I put myself in.'
Spears said her mother Lynne Spears 'was very upset because it wasn't what she expected at all. A week after, she had time to cope with it and became very supportive.'
Nickelodeon, which screens 'Zoey 101', issued a statement saying: 'We respect Jamie Lynn's decision to take responsibility in this sensitive and personal situation. We know this is a very difficult time for her and her family, and our primary concern right now is for Jamie Lynn's well being.'
The Access Hollywood source was quoted as saying that Spears and Aldridge 'want to get married really bad,' but that Jamie Lynn has 'the mind of a teenager. She doesn't understand the ramifications. She's just a child with not a lick of sense.'
The source added: 'There's no reasoning with her', and explained that Jamie Lynn is 'not thinking 10 years down the road, not even two years down the road'.
As to whether an abortion was ever an issue, the source vaguely said there were external forces who pushed for it but Jamie Lynn 'didn't consider it at all', and 'the family said 'no''.
